Alstom to supply ERTMS for mass transit in Toronto
The GO Transit commuter rail network in the Greater Toronto & Hamilton Area is being expanded. For the first time in North America, ERTMS will be installed. Alstom is responsible for this part of the contract as a partner in an international consortium.
In essence, the diesel trains are to be replaced by electric trains, and a 30-minute frequency is also planned on the main routes. Extensive infrastructure upgrades are planned for this: 205 km of new tracks, 687 km of electrification, new workshops, new train protection and control technology and the modernisation of level crossings.
The design, construction, operation and maintenance contract covers the infrastructure and electric trains, as well as operation for 25 years, including staffing and timetabling, and train control. The contract was awarded to the ONxpress consortium, led by Deutsche Bahn International Operation (DB IO), Alstom, the Canadian construction company Aecon Concessions and the Spanish construction company FCC Construcción.
Alstom will supply the signalling equipment and rolling stock, using ERTMS for the first time in North America. Alstom will also provide maintenance for the signalling systems over 25 years, in addition to the modernisation and maintenance of vehicles. DB IO will take over the planning, operation and maintenance of the traffic. Aecon and FCC Group are responsible for the construction of the infrastructure.
The project will start with a two-year development phase, during which Metrolinx and ONxpress will define project scope, risk allocation and pricing so that the final contract value and schedule can be confirmed in 2024. (cm)
